Understanding the 4Cs

The 4Cs was developed by the GIA and is considered the gold standard in diamond grading. The 4Cs consist of: colour, clarity, cut and carat.

Colour

The colour scale represents how much noticeable colour  is visible in the diamond.

The scale begins with D (being colourless) and ends in Z (light yellow or brown).

*Note: Colours before grade j (i.e colour i and before) cannot to seen by the untrained eye (source: GIA).

Clarity

Clarity is unique to each diamond and refers to the ‘birthmarks’ or ‘fingerprints’ of a diamond called inclusions and blemishes. Clarity is graded under 10x magnification as most inclusions are not visible with the naked eye.

The clarity scale  ranges from F (flawless with no inclusions and blemishes) to I3 (obvious inclusions).

Cut

The cut of the diamond refers to how much sparkle and shine is emitted from the diamond. The diamond is assessed on the amount of brightness (the total light reflected from a diamond), fire (the dispersion of light into the colors of the spectrum), and scintillation (the pattern of light and dark areas and the flashes of light, or sparkle, when a diamond is moved).

The scale ranges from excellent to poor.

Carat

The carat of a diamond refers to it’s weight. One carat is approximately 0.2g (same as a paperclip) .
